Photo Blog Day 2: Concrete Information

Image
We first started the morning with a brief talk from Becca from JHC about the history, agriculture of Nicaragua, and sesame seed production!! After a delicious breakfast, we took the trucks (which we call the ambulancia) to the clinic, where we were going to work for the morning.   When we first got to the clinic, Kathleen, who was the “director” of the clinic gave us a tour and talked to us about what they did at the clinic, what we would be working on, and why it was all important. This picture shows one of the many rooms at the clinic. They had a dentist, a pharmacist,  radiologist, gynecologist, a general doctor and a lab technician. When we finished our tour, we immediately started work. We split off into groups, some of us made the concrete, and the rest layed and smoothed it to make the floor in the third clinic building. After we had worked for a couple hours, we went to JHC for lunch and listened from the people who ...

On page 267 when we see her families picture, it gave me a real prospective on this story. When I normally read books, i dont always comprehend that they are real at first, I just imagine the characters in my head. When I came across this page, and saw those photographs of the people holding their signs, I realized how all of those traumatizing stories were real, and it happened to them. I connected with the character more, and the hardships they went through, and I could put a face on the character I had imagined in my head.

The part I enjoyed most about the process of the oral history project was hearing everyone's stories and getting diffrent perspectives. Sitting in my interview hearing the hard time Mrs. Chavis went through with her house really gave me insight to what people went through, and also helped me connect with other people who had similar experiences to me. I was strongly affected by Harvey and didn't get to hear many other stories before this, and thought I had it worse. After hearing this, I truly realized other people had it as hard as I did which made coping with it easier. As well as that, feeling in charge felt really nice. I felt like the boss while I was scheduling the interviews and I enjoyed that feeling of power. For future students doing this same project, I would tell them to plan ahead for everything. Make sure everyone is able to complete their part, and leave yourself with enough time. Our project had many rough patches, for starters, our first interview didn'...

I feel like marjane finds it difficult to fit back into the Iranian society because on page it said how her hard times in had scarred her, she had been regarded as absolutely nothing, and it gave her depression. When she got back it talked about how she came to terms with that in a way, and saw a shrink and was prescribed medicine to make it better. I feel like the depression put a large halt in her social life, leading into a difficult time fitting in. On page 271, she was talking to her therapist and said, “I have no drive, nothing gives me pleasure.” This leads into my point about depression, it's hard to fit in and to be a function part of society if you are constantly in a state of sadness and don't feel anything. What really surprised me was on page 272, when Marjane hurt herself, and then attempted suicide. This showed me how she felt so belittled and so distant from everyone and so alone the only way out was to end her own life. I got this from the top of page 272, whe...
I feel family plays a strong role in Marjane's life because she’s spent all of her youth with them and they've had a big impact in who shes become and how she acts. As a child, her dad really didnt want her to speak her voice out, so I feel that has had a strong impact on how she speaks out and interacts with other people. I feel as her family affects her as a person because her dad is more uptight leading to her later on being more cautious of her actions and words,as well as  and then her mom is very sweet which has given her a more genuine caring side. As you can tell from the story Marjane is kind of sky and socially awkward, and I think that is due to not much exposure to the real world and friendships, due to the war, but also due to the way she was raised and her parents personalities. I feel like how her parents have affected her as a narrator is basically what I said before, but as she is narrating throughout the book you can really tell how what they said made her f...
